Staff and Volunteers Debbie Handlson, Director SPACE—WE NEED SPACE!!!!!! Due to the generosity of the community, we have had to locate additional warehouse space to store the abundance of non-perishable foods (approximately 40,000 pounds) that has been purchased and contributed to Helping Hands by a local business. We have also been the recipient of over 10,000 pounds of food from the local TTU fraternity/sorority food drive in November. These contributions along with other generous food donations from churches, businesses and individuals have filled our facility to overflowing. A generous supporter of Helping Hands has graciously allowed us to use a portion of his warehouse space and also arranged transportation with Averitt Express to transport the food to the donor warehouse. As a result of our growth and the generous donations of the community, we are in need of more space. We currently have approximately 2,055 square feet of office and storage space. Adding the current off-site warehouse space that is being donated to us, we would need at least 3,900 square feet in one location. The space would accommodate two additional offices for client intake and administrative duties, a classroom for financial and nutritional instruction, a resource waiting area and an additional food storage area. Having all resources in one location would eliminate the need of periodically transporting food items from one location to another and finding the manpower to assist us on these trips. If you know of any available space-please contact us. We also have the need of manpower to aid in the transportation of food items from the warehouse to our offices. Please also contact us if you know of a group needing such a community service project. Thank you for all you do to continue assisting those in need. We are so pleased to have eight new volunteers at Helping Hands. We can always use more helpers. Please let us know if you have some extra time in your schedule to volunteer. As we continue to grow, we are seeing the need for more space. We currently have a donor who allows us to use part of his business's warehouse space for excess canned goods. Another freezer and a refrigerator were donated to Helping Hands to store additional donated frozen and refrigerated items. Please join us in considering a solution to our space problem. As Putnam County’s unemployment continues to be a concern, we know there will be more requests for our services."
